By Chelsea Deffenbacher:
Thirty-six drivers were cited Wednesday, August 19th, during the Eugene Police Department Traffic Enforcement Operation on River Road.
In addition, 21 warnings were issued.
Eugene Police officers with the Traffic Safety Unit as well as the patrol division stopped 52 vehicles between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on the River Road corridor from River Road to Northwest Expressway and River Road to Beacon Drive. The focus of the operation was on distracted driving and speed violations.
The River Road corridor was an area of focus due to a combination of public concerns and the quantity of recent serious injury and fatal crashes in the area within the last few years. The speed zone changes several months ago still provide opportunities to educate the public on the speed reduction as the speed limit throughout the entire corridor is 35 mph.
Officers noted there were several violations of Distracted Driving where citizens appeared to be relying on technology of self-driving vehicles and not being an active and focused participant in the driving process.
The Eugene Police Traffic Safety Unit would also like to remind the motoring public to exercise due regard for yourself and other people by simply obeying the laws in place to keep you safe.
